Use gender neutral language for all forms of content you’re writing. Gender-neutral language prevents us from stereotyping either sex and avoids antagonising readers.
Avoid singular, masculine pronouns (he, his, him) and the awkward “s/he” and “she or he” by switching a singular phrase to plural:
- Avoid: Give each developer his own web space for uploads.
- Use: Give developers their own web spaces for uploads.
- Avoid: The customer receives his own user ID and password.
- Use: The customer receives their own user ID and password.
- Use generic nouns and adjectives and neutral occupations rather than ones that specifically refer to man or men. For example, instead of ‘Fireman’, you can say ‘Firefighter’.
