When using acronyms and abbreviations, in some cases the term should be spelled out fully on first usage, and the acronym or abbreviation should be shown in parentheses. Then, use the acronym or abbreviation thereafter in the text. When spelling out an acronym, capitalise the first letter of each word used in the acronym, for example, Safety Data Sheet.
There are exceptions to this rule. For example, if an abbreviation is extremely well known by the audience, and more commonly used than its corresponding full term (for example HTTP or HTML), there is generally no need to provide the full term on first usage.
